QCT Delivers the Ultimate Scale-Out Building Block for Software Defined Storage

SAN JOSE, January 31, 2018 -  Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT), a global data center solution provider, today released a 1U dual socket server, named the QuantaGrid D52T-1ULH with support for 12x 3.5-inch and 4x 2.5-inch NVMe™ (Non-Volatile Memory Express) hot swappable form factor drives. It is QCT’s latest Intel® Xeon® Scalable server which can support up to 180 terabytes for hot and cold data tiering, and ideally this hierarchical storage solution has been well validated, and can be used as a scale-out building block infrastructure for major storage solutions in the market such as Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), VMware vSan, Hadoop, and Ceph.
The D52T-1ULH not only provides a large storage space at the terabyte level, but it is also accompanied by dual Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, with a maximum of 1.5TB of memory (12x single 128GB memory capacity), and comes standard with redundant hot-swap cooling fans, power supplies, and hot-swap drive trays for increased serviceability and availability.
With a total of 16 drives in a 1U system, QCT’s has created a new dense system design which will provide NVMe capacity at scale along with 12x HDDs in a compact 1U rack space.   The NVMe technology was added to this standard sized 1U chassis to unleash the best possible latency and provide faster CPU to data storage performance with a 4:1 HDD to SSD ratio, and when applied to S2D there was an 84% reduction in latency, 140% gain in IOPS and 200% gain in throughput performance when compared to existing similar 1U models.  Further proof that the D52T-1ULH is optimized for the new NVMe form factor could also be seen in the fact that these significant performance improvements were accomplished with only 2 nodes outperforming the existing 4 node storage solutions.  What this translates into is a savings on the OPEX and CAPEX when businesses want to implement a S2D or similar storage solution.
In comparison with today’s 1U HDD-based storage server, this hybrid setup is a better TCO due to the reduced cost of storage nodes and software license fees which many service providers are looking for.  Additionally, the use of three media types is a cost effective way for managed service providers to manage their resources when they provide various SLAs.  Utilizing such an all-in-one hybrid system allows companies to begin building their infrastructure with the minimal storage investment and flexibly scale-out afterwards with predictable performance gains when running their software-defined workloads.
